The county of Woodford was formed in 1788 from a part of Fayette County, Virginia. The county seat of Versailles wasn’t settled until 1837. During the Civil War, Versailles was actually occupied by forces on both sides of the war at different times. Situated in the heart of the horse racing region, Woodford County and Versailles have numerous thoroughbred horse farms located there, and those farms help beautify the Bluegrass Region. One of Kentucky’s more famous bourbon whiskeys, Woodford Reserve, calls Woodford County home. The Woodford Reserve Distillery is the oldest distillery in the state of Kentucky with over 200 years under its belt. The town of Versailles was founded in 1792 and was named after Versailles, France, in honor of General Lafayette.
